Meet our TerraCyclers: Jim Alturo
Imagine this: You’re enjoying your retirement after a 40-year career and a stint serving the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. You’re on a walk, and what do you see but the most littered item in the world: cigarette butts. Some might ignore it and move on, but not 70-year-old Jim Alturo of Cinnaminson, New Jersey.
Jim started picking up cigarette butts and other trash around his community in 2023 with a goal of collecting 15,000 cigarette butts. However, by the end of the year, he ended up with 24,185! His next goal? To pick up 35,000 cigarette butts in 2024.
After he collects these cigarette butts, he recycles them through TerraCycle to keep them out of landfills and incinerators and to give the plastics inside the butts (Yes, cigarettes consist primarily of plastic!) a new life through recycling.
